Japan – Australia University Dialogue 2019 (October 9-10)

Japan – Australia University Dialogue 2019 was held on the 9th and 10th of October. The event was co-hosted by the Japan Association of National Universities and Universities Australia (an association of Australian universities). The event was held at the host university that is Osaka University.

On the first day of the program, approximately 20 participants from Australian universities attended. The attendees included Professor Caroline McMillen, Chief Scientist of South Australia from the Government of South Australia, and the Hon. Richard Court AC, Australian Ambassador to Japan. The discussion was held between approximately 80 participants including Japanese universities. Dr Koetsu Yamazaki, President of Kanazawa University and Vice President of JANU were in attendance. The topic of discussion was “Reaching higher– lifting Japan – Australia university and industry collaboration to new heights.” Participants from both countries shared information regarding outstanding initiatives for university-industry-government collaboration between countries. There was a wide range of views exchanged on issues that are common between the two countries. This was based on various perspectives between the participants from universities, companies, and governments.

After closing the conference, a networking reception was held at Restaurant Minerva, Osaka University. Participants from Japan and Australia deepened their friendship in a relaxed atmosphere.

On the second day of the program, 10 participants from Australia visited the Techno-Alliance Building of Osaka University. Here they received an explanation about progressive initiatives for university-industry collaboration taken by Osaka University. They also exchanged views with members from companies at the Hitz Research Alliance Laboratory and DAIKIN Research Alliance Laboratory, which are involved in university-industry collaboration activities on the University campus.

We expect international exchange between Japan and Australia to become even more active in the future, and JANU will promote efforts to expand exchanges between both countries in cooperation with Universities Australia.
