2018 Japan-Spain Presidents’ Joint Symposium(November 27-28)

The “2018 Japan-Spain Presidents’ Joint Symposium” was held on November 27 and 28, 2018, at University of Salamanca to stimulate Japan-Spain inter-university exchanges, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Spain, and as part of the project for the 800th anniversary of the founding of University of Salamanca. The symposium was jointly sponsored by University of Salamanca and Tokyo University of Foreign Studies with the cooperation of the Embassy of Japan in Madrid, Spain and Japan Committee of Universities for International Exchange (JACUIE) at which the Japan Association of National Universities (JANU) acts as the secretariat. In addition, prior to the symposium, a joint press conference was held by University of Salamanca, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, the Embassy of Japan in Madrid, Spain and JACUIE.

The main theme of the symposium was “Promotion of Academic Cooperation between Japan and Spain” and around 70 officials of higher education institutions from both countries participated. On the first day, after the opening remarks and following a networking lunch sponsored by the Embassy of Japan in Madrid, Spain, keynote speeches were given on the current state of initiatives regarding university internationalization and relevant policies, and a lively discussion ensued. Next, after a tour of the campus, a reception was held by University of Salamanca at its Hispano-Japanese Cultural Centre which provided an opportunity for Japanese and Spanish university officials to deepen friendships in a relaxing atmosphere. Also, after the reception, a night tour was conducted within the city of Salamanca for those interested.

On the second day, a presentation was given by each of the Japanese and Spanish universities on exemplars of each of 4 sub themes related to the main theme stated above (courses in English and university internationalization, viewpoints on world university ranking, support for environmental adaptation and preparation of infrastructure for international students, promotion of inter-university exchanges beyond language and regional research activities). Successively, the participating Japanese and Spanish universities were matched up in order to provide an opportunity to trigger promotion of future cooperation. Finally, closing remarks were made and a successful symposium brought to a close.

From here on, we expect that there will be further lively international exchanges between Japanese and Spanish universities, and JANU will cooperate with Spanish university association, etc., and will promote efforts for lively exchanges between the two sides.
